I'm not here to tell you what to think of Donald Trump, or to relitigate George Washington's legacy. I'm here to invite you to consider something older and stranger than politics: the possibility that souls return, that history moves in circles and spirals, and that the closing of one era is simply the opening bell of the next.
If you focus only on well-documented historical facts rather than political opinion, the parallels between these two men are striking enough to stop you in your tracks. Washington and Trump share a physical resemblance that's easy to overlook — reddish-brown hair, comparable height, and a strong, imposing build. From there, the parallels only deepen:
Both came from wealthy real-estate families
Washington inherited substantial landholdings and expanded his estate at Mount Vernon. Trump inherited and expanded a family real-estate business in New York. Both were known as businessmen and property developers before becoming president.
Both lost influential older brothers
Washington's older half-brother, Lawrence, was a major mentor whose death historians regard as a formative event in George's life. Trump was similarly shaped by the death of his older brother, Fred Trump Jr., which influenced his views on alcohol and personal discipline.
Both cultivated a larger-than-life public image
Washington carefully crafted an image of dignity, strength, and military bearing. Trump has been just as conscious of branding and public image throughout his career. In different eras and different styles, both men understood the power of perception.
Both projected physical vigor
Washington was an exceptional horseman, outdoorsman, and athlete, described by contemporaries as unusually strong and physically imposing. Trump has long emphasized energy, stamina, and physical robustness as part of his public persona.
Neither was known primarily as an intellectual theorist
Neither man is remembered as a philosopher-president in the mold of Thomas Jefferson. Both leaned toward practical, action-oriented decision-making — Washington as a surveyor, military commander, and farmer; Trump as a businessman and developer.
Both inspired unusually strong loyalty
Washington's soldiers and countrymen developed intense personal loyalty toward him during and after the Revolution. Trump has generated a similarly unusual degree of personal loyalty among supporters compared with most modern politicians.
Neither was known for heavy alcohol use, and both worked hard into older age
Washington drank socially but in moderation and opposed excess; Trump is notable among modern presidents for abstaining from alcohol entirely, a choice he has tied to his brother's struggles. Both also maintained demanding schedules well into their later decades — Washington active at Mount Vernon into his late sixties, Trump maintaining a heavy public schedule into his seventies and eighties.
Strong confidence in their own judgment, and an outsider appeal
Both men listened to advisers but ultimately trusted their own instincts. And both arrived in the presidency from outside the traditional political class — Washington from military command and plantation life, Trump from the business world — which made each of them beloved by supporters and viewed with suspicion by political elites, in their respective eras.
An unexpected parallel: both became symbols larger than themselves
During their lifetimes, supporters viewed both men not merely as leaders but as embodiments of a vision of America. That level of symbolic status is rare among U.S. presidents, and it helps explain why both figures continue to generate strong reactions centuries apart — Washington faced brutal partisan press in his second term, even privately noting he'd been compared to Nero, the tyrannical Roman emperor. Trump's presidency has been defined by similarly intense media combat. In both cases, supporters saw a strong, decisive figure cutting through corruption or weakness, while critics saw dangerous overreach.
Finally, both men were acutely conscious of image, symbolism, and legacy. Washington stage-managed his public appearances, his portraits, even his choice to step down after two terms — a deliberate act of legacy-building meant to define what the presidency should look like. Trump has been just as attentive to branding, spectacle, and how his moments are remembered. Two men, two centuries apart, both instinctively understanding that leadership is inseparable from the story a leader tells about himself.

Why This Matters — And Why It Isn't About Politics
I want to be very clear about my purpose here, because it would be easy to mistake this for a political argument. It is not. My goal is not to convince you that Trump is good or bad, right or wrong. My goal is to help you consider something much bigger: that life moves in circles, that beginnings and endings are the same event seen from two angles, and that everything — nations included — repeats in pattern.
If Washington pioneered and built the infrastructure of this country, and Trump is his twin soul, then it follows — intentionally or unintentionally — that Trump's role may be to close that circle. And circles are also spirals. What looks like the crumbling of old infrastructure can also be read as purification: clearing space for the next turn of the spiral, the next great era — what some traditions call the Sat Yuga, an age of renewed truth and order rising from what came before.
This is offered as a lens, not a verdict. You don't have to agree with the political read to sit with the deeper pattern: that some souls are simply wired to be change-bringers — starters, finishers, transformers who arrive at the hinge points of history and leave the world irreversibly altered. Washington was one. This system suggests Trump may be another. The question worth sitting with isn't who was right. It's what it means that history keeps sending us the same kind of soul, again and again, exactly when the circle needs closing — or opening.
